Playing music when you workout lifts your mood and keeps you motivated from start to finish to improve your results. The best gym playlists aren’t necessarily just made up of your favourite songs, it’s the songs that will motivate you to perform and boost your energy levels.
When you’re creating your gym playlist, you should think about how your workout builds. If you’re doing a cardio session, you want to build up to a consistent level which is maintained, while if you’re doing a weights session, you are more likely to have different levels of intensity throughout your programme which your playlist can reflect.
It’s a good idea to start your gym playlist with a really motivating tune, one that builds up to reflect the energy levels that you want to hit, and which you really enjoy. There’s no point in starting your session with a ballad, because it won’t get you going!
Think about what you’re going to be doing throughout your session, and try and pick tunes for your gym playlist that will match your exertion levels. That way you will always have motivational music to keep you going through the last KM on the treadmill or the last few reps on the weights bench.
Try and time your playlist so that it tapers towards a more relaxing tune at the end of your session. A 5 minute cool down session that corresponds to some light, atmospheric music can be more satisfying and relaxing.
