What is HIIT?

Whether you go to the gym or work out at home, you’ll probably have heard some miracle stories from people who’ve improved their fitness quickly and lost weight using something called HIIT.  HIIT – or High Intensity Interval Training is a system of working out in which you do short periods of very intensive exercise interspersed with quick breaks – so you might do 1 minute of sprinting or Burpees followed by a 30 second break.

High Intensity Interval Training

HIIT has a number of advantages as a training method, including the speed of the workout (some HIIT plans use 5-7 minute workouts) but it also provides you with serious fitness benefits and improves your body’s explosive power making it a great choice for anyone who takes part in sports.

HIIT Benefits

According to various studies that have been carried out, HIIT has a number of measurable benefits for fitness including:

  • Improved VO2 Max
  • Improved Insulin Sensitivity
  • Increased metabolism (faster fat burning)

HIIT also improves general fitness levels – especially when combined with traditional aerobic exercise such as cycling or running.

If you’re using techniques such as Fartlek to improve your running performance, then you’ll already be gaining some of the benefits that High Intensity Interval Training can bring you, especially around improved VO2 Max performance and improved sprint speed, however it can also be a good idea to add a couple of sessions of HIIT each week – especially since you can fit them in quickly around your existing workout plan.

5 Minute Fitness?

Vytalz was built on the principals of High Intensity Interval Training – our computer generated workouts give you a quick burst approach to exercise with short sessions designed to work out different parts of your body.

At first it seems that High Intensity Interval Training is too good to be true – after all, how can you get fit in just 5 minutes.  However like all regimes, it’s really important to look at the longer term  structure of your fitness programme.  You will not get fit in 5 minutes if you only do one work out, however if you follow a pattern of HIIT to boost general conditioning, and combine it with other exercises, you will get great results quite quickly and develop a better body.
